Temppeliaukio Church, known as the Rock Church, is a Lutheran church in Helsinki’s Töölö district, at Lutherinkatu 3. Opened in 1969, it was excavated into solid granite, leaving the natural rock walls exposed inside. Look up to see the copper-lined dome and the narrow band of windows that brings daylight into the church hall. The combination of stone, copper and glass gives the space its distinctive character; its acoustics also make it a venue for concerts.

A church carved into granite

Temppeliaukio Church is in Töölö, west of central Helsinki. Its name is often rendered in English as the Rock Church or Church of the Rock, a reference to the bedrock that forms its interior walls. The building is partly underground, so the church hall feels enclosed by the rock rather than set inside a conventional exterior shell.

Architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen designed the church after winning a competition. It opened in 1969. The exposed stone gives the interior an irregular, natural surface; marks left during excavation remain visible in places. The design brings together that rugged granite with a copper-lined dome and a ring of windows around the roof.

The church hall is covered by a broad dome lined with copper. A band of glazing around its edge lets daylight enter, carrying light down toward the altar wall. Before noon, the light can spread from the windows toward the altar, where an Ice Age crevice in the rock serves as the altarpiece.

Look up from the stone walls to see how the roof meets the surrounding rock. The gallery gives a higher view across the circular interior and makes it easier to take in the relationship between the dome, the windows and the stone. The church’s design leaves the natural rock as a visible part of the room, rather than covering it with a uniform finish.

A working church and concert venue

Temppeliaukio is a Lutheran church as well as an architectural landmark. Its acoustics have made it a venue for concerts, and music is part of how the space is used. If a concert or service is taking place during your visit, follow the quiet and respectful behaviour expected in a place of worship.

The church is at Lutherinkatu 3. Its website recommends getting tickets in advance. Accessibility provisions include a wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating and restroom, along with an assistive hearing loop. Check the church’s current visitor information before setting out, since access to a working church can depend on its activities.
