Bristol Aquarium sits on Anchor Road in the city’s Harbourside, next to We The Curious. Its more than 40 displays trace sea and freshwater habitats, from British waters to tropical reefs and rainforest pools. Look for sharks, rays, seahorses and other marine life in exhibits such as the Bay of Rays and Coral Seas, then walk through the underwater tunnel. A botanical house adds a tropical plant collection to the visit. Talks, feeding sessions and hands-on activities give families more to explore; allow time to pause at the tanks rather than rushing through.

From British waters to tropical habitats

The aquarium brings together more than 40 displays based on marine and freshwater environments. The route moves from British coastal habitats through warmer waters and tropical rainforest settings to coral seas. Along the way, you can look for sharks, stingrays, seahorses, octopuses and colourful fish.

Named exhibits include Sunken Shipwreck, Bay of Rays, Learning Lab, Mighty Amazon and Coral Seas. The Sunken Shipwreck recreates a ship at life size, while the aquarium’s model of Bristol’s historic harbour links its displays to the city’s waterside setting. A walk-in seahorse display provides another close view of a particular marine habitat.

The underwater tunnel and Coral Seas

The underwater tunnel is one of the aquarium’s defining features. Reinforced glass surrounds the walkway, with marine life moving above and around you. Sharks and rays are among the animals visitors can spot here, so take your time instead of treating the tunnel as a passage between exhibits.

At Coral Seas, a wooden footbridge crosses above the large open-top display. Sharks and tropical fish swim below it. Some tanks can also be viewed from above as well as from the usual viewing level, giving you another way to observe the animals.

Plants, talks and activities

The Urban Jungle Botanical House brings a different kind of habitat into the visit. It contains plant and tree species from around the world, and its covered walkway includes a waterfall and exotic plants. Seating in the greenhouse gives you a place to pause between displays.

For a more active visit with children, look out for the touch pools and other hands-on activities. Talks and feeding sessions add information about the animals and their care. Staff are available to answer questions, and the Learning Lab is among the named permanent exhibits. Checking the schedule before you arrive can help you fit a session into your visit.

Planning your visit

The aquarium is on Anchor Road at Bristol Harbourside, next to We The Curious. Nearby multi-storey car parks are an option if you are travelling by car; paid parking is also listed for the area. The aquarium has a café and gift shop, along with seating where you can take a break.

The route is compact, but there is enough to see that a slower pace suits the displays. Families can make use of the interactive activities, while anyone interested in marine life may want to linger at the larger tanks. Advance tickets are recommended. A quieter weekday or a visit during term time can give you more space to look closely.
