M Shed is a free museum on Princes Wharf, Bristol’s Harbourside, in a former dockside transit shed. Its galleries trace the city’s story from prehistoric times to the present through objects, photographs, films and interactive displays. Look for exhibits on Bristol’s people, places and everyday life, including displays about the slave trade and protest, plus works linked to Banksy and Massive Attack. Head upstairs for views across the harbour, then stop at the onsite café. Some temporary exhibitions charge admission and may need advance booking.

A dockside shed turned museum

M Shed occupies a former transit shed on Princes Wharf, beside Bristol’s Floating Harbour. The building’s name comes from the way harbour sheds were traditionally identified. The museum opened in 2011, taking over the site of the former Bristol Industrial Museum.

Its subject is Bristol and the people who have shaped it. The displays span from prehistoric times to the 21st century, using artefacts, photographs, films and personal accounts to connect the city’s past with its present. The setting puts that story beside the docks that played a major part in Bristol’s maritime and industrial life.

People, places and everyday life

The galleries look at different sides of the city, including Bristol People, Bristol Places and Bristol Life. The displays are arranged by themes, so you can move between topics and periods rather than following one straight timeline. They cover the city’s development, its transport and industry, and the lives of people who lived and worked here.

Expect a mix of familiar city history and less comfortable subjects. Bristol’s role in the transatlantic slave trade and the history of protest are among the topics addressed. Displays also touch on science, music, art and technology, alongside details of ordinary life, from work and school to food and celebrations. Objects and recorded stories help make those themes specific to Bristol.

Objects with a Bristol connection

The collection includes items tied to the city’s cultural life and public history. Look out for a Banksy work, spray-painted record decks associated with Massive Attack, and models of Wallace and Gromit, characters created by Bristol-based Aardman. Other displays include transport and industrial objects, such as an old bus, and material connected with Bristol’s changing streets and communities.

Some exhibitions are temporary and change over time. A past Aardman display brought together models, sketches, videos and props from the studio’s work. Temporary shows can have a separate charge, and advance booking is recommended when capacity is limited. Check the museum’s website for what is currently on before you plan around a particular exhibition.

Harbour views and a café stop

The upper floor and terrace give you a view across the harbour and its dockside cranes. The cranes outside are part of the site’s working-industrial character, and the waterfront is easy to explore on foot after your visit.

There is a café inside the museum, with seating and views towards the harbour, as well as a gift shop. The museum is free to enter, and you can choose whether to make a donation. It is family-friendly and has wheelchair access to all floors. Some galleries can feel loud and echoey when busy, so a Calm Morning is a useful option if you prefer a quieter visit.
