Kurz gesagt

Fly into Gregorio Luperón airport (POP), about 15 minutes from Sosúa, not Punta Cana, which the Ministry of Tourism says is up to seven hours away by road. Complete the free e-ticket form before you reach the airline desk, carry a return ticket and use a hotel transfer or an authorized taxi.

Fly into Puerto Plata, then take a 15-minute transfer

Gregorio Luperón International Airport, code POP, is the gateway for Sosúa. The Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism puts Sosúa 15 minutes from the airport and describes the airport as about 20 minutes from Puerto Plata city, near Cofresí, Playa Dorada, Sosúa and Cabarete, with Playa Grande and Río San Juan about an hour away by road. For the town itself, see the Sosúa travel guide, and for the wider country, the Dominican Republic guide.

The ministry gives a blunt warning about gateways: this is a large island, road distances are often too great to cover in a single day, and traveling overland between the Punta Cana and Puerto Plata airports can take up to seven hours. If Sosúa is your base, book a flight into POP, or into Santiago as a second option, instead of landing in Punta Cana and driving. The ministry calls Santiago's airport a possible second gateway if you are staying in Puerto Plata, but adds that you should allow extra transport time before a return flight. For a trip that includes both coasts, plan two stays rather than one long drive, and read Punta Cana and Santo Domingo as separate bases.

What you must complete before you fly

Entry rules are the part of this trip that can stop you at the airline desk, so they come first. The Ministry of Tourism says most visitors, including those from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union, do not need a visa to enter as tourists. The UK government says British citizens can visit for tourism without a visa for 30 days. Tourists must meet the following requirements, according to the ministry: a passport, a ticket of entry and return by air, sea or land, a permanent address in the Dominican Republic and proof of enough funds for the stay. A hotel booking or a rental address covers the address line.

Read the ministry page for your own nationality, because the measure ends on a fixed date and rules after it can change; the UK government says the rules may change after 31 December 2026 and points travelers to the ministry. The six-month passport rule explains why many countries ask for extra validity and how to check yours. If you plan to stay beyond 30 days, the UK government says you can pay to extend a visit up to 120 days through the Dominican Republic Immigration Service, so ask early rather than at the end of the stay.

The form is free and official. Use the migration site named in the callout, and be careful with look-alike sites that add charges. The ministry says it is no longer required 72 hours before the trip and can be filled in as soon as you have flight details, but must be done before you reach the airline desk because the airline will ask for it. The UK government notes the form includes a customs declaration and the international boarding and disembarking form, while UK guidance describes a window of up to seven days before arrival, so follow the ministry page for the current rule. Screenshot or print the QR codes for arrival and for departure.

The ministry also says that airlines must confirm a round-trip ticket for foreign passengers before boarding, and passengers without it can be denied boarding. If you plan to arrive by one route and leave by another, such as flying in to Puerto Plata and out of Santo Domingo, keep proof of the onward ticket handy. Border officials take fingerprints and a photograph, the UK government says, so allow time on arrival.

Your transfer options from POP to Sosúa

You have four realistic options: a hotel transfer, an authorized airport taxi, a ride-hailing app, or a rental car. A fifth, public transport, is possible but a poor fit for the day you arrive with luggage. The right choice depends on your arrival time, your party size and how much you want to plan.

Hotel transfer or pre-booked car

A pre-arranged pickup is the easiest option for a first visit, because the driver waits with a sign and you know the fare before you land. The UK government advises using an authorized airport or hotel taxi service, or booking from a registered provider, because many taxis are in poor condition. Ask your hotel to confirm the vehicle, the fare and what happens if your flight is late. This is the best choice for a late-evening arrival, and it also suits families and travelers with bulky dive gear.

Airport taxi

Authorized taxis wait outside arrivals. Agree the fare and the destination before you get in, and avoid unmarked cars or anyone who approaches you in the terminal. Keep your phone and wallet out of sight and keep your bags with you. A taxi is flexible and avoids the cost of a pre-booked service, but you pay at the counter, so carry some cash in small notes.

Ride-hailing

The ministry says Uber operates in Puerto Plata, one of three cities with the service. If your phone has data and the driver can reach the pickup point, a ride-hailing app removes the language barrier and shows the route. Check that the app works for a trip out of the airport and for the specific town you are going to before you rely on it. Set up mobile data before you land with an eSIM so that maps and the app work as soon as you leave the terminal; the guide to setting up an eSIM before you fly covers the steps.

Rental car

A car is useful if you plan to cover the north coast widely, but it adds cost and risk for a base in Sosúa. The UK government says you can use a UK photocard driving license for up to three months, and you may need an international driving permit with an older paper license; rental companies often have stricter requirements, such as a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age and an IDP. Road accidents are frequent, especially during holiday periods such as Christmas and Easter, and driving outside the main cities at night can be dangerous because of poor lighting, animals and pedestrians. The international driving permit guide explains when you need one, and renting a car abroad explains insurance. For a three-night beach stay in Sosúa, a rental car is often not worth it.

Buses and the Santiago and Santo Domingo options

If you arrive elsewhere in the country, the ministry says comfortable coach services connect the major cities with the north coast, including Puerto Plata and Sosúa, and the UK government notes that private companies run good bus services between cities. Public buses and shared cars called carros publicos are a different matter: the UK government says they are often uninsured, not registered and poorly maintained. For a first trip, choose the private intercity coach or a pre-booked car over a shared vehicle.

If your flight lands in Santo Domingo, treat the journey north as a separate day and plan a night in the city. The Santo Domingo guide covers the colonial zone, which makes a natural first night. Motorbike taxis, called motoconchos, are the quick option for locals, but the ministry warns that they are the most dangerous way to travel in heavy traffic and often provide no helmet, so skip them.

Safety on arrival day

The UK government describes the crime rate in the Dominican Republic as high in places, with bag-snatching and pickpocketing, and says thieves on motorcycles snatch bags and phones from pedestrians and sometimes reach through car windows at red lights. In a taxi or a rental car, keep windows shut and doors locked, and keep bags on the side away from the road. Do not display phones or jewelry at the curb. Bank card cloning is a risk, so keep your card in view when you pay and consider paying in cash for small purchases. If you are robbed, do not fight back.

Emergency numbers are worth saving before you land. The UK government lists 911 for police, fire and ambulance but notes it does not have full coverage across the country, and it gives the tourist police, Politur, as +1 809 200 3500 for emergencies outside Santo Domingo. Tap water is not drinkable, so buy sealed bottled water on arrival. Public medical facilities are limited and private hospitals can be expensive, so confirm your cover with the travel insurance guide before departure.

Leaving: allow time for the departure form

The same e-ticket process applies on departure. Complete the exit part of the form before you go to the airline desk, keep the QR code on your phone and carry a printed copy in case of a battery or data problem. Allow a generous buffer, since the airline will check the form at check-in and border officials may take fingerprints and photographs again. A transfer back to POP from Sosúa is short on paper, but traffic and a missed pickup can turn a 15-minute ride into a long one, so book the pickup time with margin and confirm it the night before.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not land in Punta Cana for a Sosúa stay and plan to drive. Do not skip the e-ticket form or fill in a look-alike site. Do not accept a ride from a stranger in the terminal. Do not rely on a rental car for a short beach stay. Do not count on 911 outside Santo Domingo. And do not carry original documents on the beach: use the hotel safe and carry a copy of your passport photo page and entry stamp, as the UK government advises.
