Arcos da Lapa is an 18th-century aqueduct in Rio de Janeiro’s Lapa district, formed by 42 stone arches. Built to carry water from the Carioca River to the city, it later became part of the route for the yellow Santa Teresa tram. Look up at the double rows of arches, and watch for the tram crossing overhead. The nearby Metropolitan Cathedral and Selarón Steps make easy additions to a visit. Go in daylight, stay alert to your surroundings and consider exploring with a guide or group.

An aqueduct built for Rio

Arcos da Lapa was built between 1744 and 1750 as the Aqueduto da Carioca. Its 42 stone arches carried water from the Carioca River, in the hillside area of Santa Teresa, to Centro. The aqueduct helped bring water to the city during the colonial period.

The structure’s double rows of arches give it a distinctive profile in Lapa. It is a reminder of the infrastructure that once brought water from the river into the city, and remains one of Rio’s familiar historic landmarks.

From water route to tramway

By 1896, the aqueduct was no longer in use for its original purpose. The city transportation company adapted it into a viaduct and laid tram tracks across the top. The yellow Santa Teresa tram, known locally as the bonde or bondinho, has since made the arches part of a transport route as well as a city landmark.

When the tram passes overhead, it gives the structure a sense of scale and makes a distinctive photo subject. Its route links Centro with the hillside neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

Exploring Lapa

The arches sit in Lapa, a district associated with bars, music and nightlife. Activity gathers around the structure, particularly at night and on weekends, when food and drink stalls and samba events have been reported in the area. The atmosphere can change from a daytime landmark visit to a lively evening scene.

The Metropolitan Cathedral and Selarón Steps are nearby, so you can include them on the same outing. For a first visit, daylight is the practical choice: it gives you a clearer view of the arches and surroundings. Keep aware of what is happening around you, and consider joining a guided tour or visiting with a group.
