The view from the South Rim

Artist Point

Artist Point looks into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where the Yellowstone River runs between steep canyon walls. The overlook gives you a direct view of the Lower Falls, which drops 308 feet. From here, you can also see the river and rapids below, with the canyon’s vivid yellow and orange rock adding color to the scene.

Several lookout points provide different angles on the falls and canyon. Sunrise is a good time to photograph the view: the sun comes up over the valley and lights the falls. As the day ends, the canyon walls can take on amber tones, and mist from the falls catches the last light.

A short walk or a longer trail

From the parking area at the end of South Rim Drive, a paved path leads to the main overlook. The walk is about 0.1 mile. You can also reach Artist Point by following the South Rim Trail along the Yellowstone River, or continue from the area toward Point Sublime on a longer out-and-back route.

The canyon has exposed cliffs, and some nearby trails pass close to unprotected edges. Keep children close and stay away from the rim. Wildlife may be seen on nearby trails, so give animals space.

How the viewpoint got its name

Artist Point was named by park photographer F. J. Haynes, who was associated with the viewpoint as early as 1883. Despite a common assumption, the name does not identify the place where Thomas Moran made his well-known painting of the canyon. A copy of that painting is displayed at the Canyon Visitor Education Center.
