The Kreeger Museum is a modern and contemporary art museum in Washington, DC, at the former home of collectors Carmen and David Lloyd Kreeger.

The Kreeger Museum is a modern and contemporary art museum in Washington, DC, at the former home of collectors Carmen and David Lloyd Kreeger. Philip Johnson designed the mansion, where natural light reaches galleries displaying works by Monet, Picasso, Miró, Rodin and other artists. The collection also includes traditional African and Asian art. Outside, a sculpture garden and reflecting pool extend the visit across the museum’s grounds. The themed rooms make it easy to move through the collection at your own pace.

The Kreegers’ home and collection

The museum occupies the former home of Carmen and David Lloyd Kreeger, Washington collectors and philanthropists. Their art collection is displayed in the house they commissioned from architect Philip Johnson. The building was designed in the 1960s, with a modern style that draws on architectural references including Roman arches and Islamic domes.

The collection brings together European Impressionist and modern works, modern American art, and traditional African and Asian art. Paintings by Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró are among the works on view. You can also find art by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne and other painters, alongside sculpture by Auguste Rodin. The range gives the visit more than one point of focus: the artists, the different traditions represented, and the way the works sit within a former residence.

Light, rooms and architecture

Philip Johnson’s design gives the artworks a spacious setting. The galleries have high ceilings and receive natural light, which brings out details in the paintings. Rooms are arranged by theme, so you can move through the collection without needing to follow a complicated route. The interior also includes broad, well-lit spaces that keep the experience measured and calm.

Look beyond the paintings as you go. The mansion’s modern design incorporates international references, including arched forms and domed elements. Its architecture is part of the visit, not simply a backdrop for the art. The house was built as a residence for the Kreegers and later became a museum for their collection.

The sculpture garden

The museum grounds include an outdoor sculpture garden, with large-scale works set among the landscape. A reflecting pool adds another place to pause between the indoor galleries and the outdoor pieces. Sculptures by artists including Jean Arp and Henry Moore are part of the collection shown outside.

Set aside time for the grounds as well as the rooms inside. The outdoor works offer a change of scale after the paintings and smaller objects, and the garden forms a substantial part of the museum visit. The property covers five acres, so the visit extends beyond the house itself.

Planning your visit

The museum is at 2401 Foxhall Road NW in Washington, DC. It is possible to arrive by public transportation, but the walk from the bus stop can be long. If you are planning to see both the collection and garden, allow one to two hours at a comfortable pace.

A quieter weekday visit can give you more room to look closely at the paintings and architecture. Museum staff can also share information about the Kreeger family and their collection. The museum is a good fit if you want to spend time with art in a smaller, former-home setting; visitors looking for a large museum with extensive galleries should plan accordingly.
