Across the street from the U.S.

Across the street from the U.S. Botanic Garden conservatory, Bartholdi Fountain and Gardens is a compact outdoor garden at 245 1st St SW. Its centerpiece is an ornate fountain, surrounded by changing flower displays, native plants and quiet paths with benches. Look for the kitchen garden, where children can identify vegetables, and regional plantings that include bog and carnivorous species. The garden also gives you views of the U.S. Capitol and the conservatory greenhouses. Bring food to enjoy at the tables, or return after dark to see the fountain lit.

Bartholdi Fountain is the focal point of this outdoor garden across the street from the U.S. Botanic Garden conservatory. Cast in France, it was purchased by the U.S. Congress in 1877 on the advice of architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The fountain was moved to its current location in 1932.

The fountain’s designer was also the French sculptor behind the Statue of Liberty. Its detailed form draws the eye, while the surrounding garden offers a quieter place to pause between visits to the Capitol area and the conservatory.

The garden combines cultivated beds around the fountain with plantings of native and regional species. These include bog plants and carnivorous plants, and the display changes with the seasons. Spring and autumn bring particular interest for native plants, while summer brings tropical foliage and flowers.

A kitchen garden gives children a chance to spot vegetables. Paths, benches, shade and tables make the space useful for a short rest; you can bring food and eat at the tables. The setting also frames views of the U.S. Capitol and the Botanic Garden greenhouses.

Garden Ambassadors lead free public programs throughout the year and can answer questions about the plants. The fountain is lit at night, so the garden has a different feel after dark.
