Petco Park

Petco Park is the downtown San Diego home of the Padres, at 100 Park Blvd.

Petco Park is the downtown San Diego home of the Padres, at 100 Park Blvd. A game here pairs baseball with views of the city skyline and, from some parts of the stadium, San Diego Bay. The ballpark opened in 2004 and incorporates the historic Western Metal Supply Building into its design. Food is another reason to linger: local favorites and stadium classics are sold around the grounds. Even if you do not follow baseball, a game brings you into the crowd and the rhythms of a live sporting event.

Petco Park has been home to the San Diego Padres since it opened in 2004. Its location in downtown puts the stadium among the city’s high-rises and a few blocks from the Gaslamp Quarter. The ballpark also hosts concerts and other live events, so check the event schedule if you are visiting outside baseball season.

The design combines sandstone, stucco and white-painted steel. The historic Western Metal Supply Building, built in 1909, was kept as part of the stadium. It marks the left-field foul pole, making the old brick structure one of the most distinctive details to look for as you walk around.

Views and places to explore

The skyline is visible from inside the stadium, and some areas have views toward San Diego Bay. Evening games can bring sunset views; August and September are noted for earlier sunsets, so you may not need to wait until the end of a game to see the light change.

Gallagher Square, once called Park at the Park, sits beyond the outfield. It is a grassy area with a large video board and a different feel from the seated sections. A ticket for this area does not necessarily include a chair, so check what your ticket covers before you arrive. It can suit visitors who want an open space and a ballpark atmosphere, but it is not the right choice if a clear view from a regular seat is your main aim.

The stadium also has souvenir shops and food stands around the grounds. The large video board and smaller screens around bars and concessions help you follow the game when you are away from your seat.

Food, events and a game-day visit

Food choices range from familiar ballpark snacks to dishes from local restaurants. Seaside Market’s tri-tip nachos are a named option, while tacos, barbecue, hot dogs and pretzels are among the other foods associated with the stadium. Craft beer is sold at stands and restaurants around the park. If convenience matters, you can order food online for delivery to your seat; an extra fee may apply.

Petco Park has hosted concerts and other sporting events as well as baseball. In the Padres’ off-season, a different event may be the reason to visit. For a closer look at areas normally reserved for the team and press, guided behind-the-scenes tours are also described as an option, including visits to the dugout and press box.

Dogs are not generally admitted to the stadium, apart from service dogs, but there are designated dog-friendly game events. The Barkyard has five semi-private viewing areas in left-center field for Padres home games. Each area can accommodate up to four people and two dogs. Check the current event details and rules before planning a visit with a pet.
