Pacific Science Center is a hands-on science museum at Seattle Center, near the Space Needle. Its exhibits span subjects including dinosaurs, space, health and natural history, with activities for children and adults. The Tropical Butterfly House brings live butterflies into a warm indoor setting, while the planetarium, two IMAX theaters and Laser Dome add shows to the visit. The center’s white arches and courtyard date to the 1962 World’s Fair. Plan around 2 to 3 hours, or longer if you want to explore more exhibits and attend a show.

A World’s Fair design

The Pacific Science Center began as the United States Science Pavilion for Seattle’s 1962 World’s Fair. Architect Minoru Yamasaki designed the complex, whose white arches and connected buildings give it a distinctive profile beside the Space Needle. The courtyard’s open-air arches are a good reason to look around before heading inside.

The design draws on forms associated with Gothic cathedrals and Islamic mosques. Yamasaki used slender arches and decorative exterior patterns to shape a modern pavilion for the fair. The science center became a City of Seattle landmark in 2010.

Exhibits to explore

The exhibits invite you to handle, test and build, with activities spanning topics such as health, engineering, space and natural history. The dinosaur display includes moving robotic reproductions. In the maker space, visitors can build and create; other exhibits use activities and demonstrations to make scientific ideas tangible.

The Tropical Butterfly House offers a change of pace from the hands-on galleries. It recreates a tropical environment for butterflies, and visitors may be given a small flower to encourage them to land nearby. The center also has exhibits about insects and marine life, including a Puget Sound model and a saltwater tide pool. Outdoor activities include water-focused displays.

Shows and planning your visit

The planetarium, two IMAX theaters and Laser Dome give you several ways to add a scheduled show to your day. The Boeing IMAX Theatre has a screen six stories high and 80 feet wide; the PACCAR IMAX Theatre has a 35-foot-tall screen. The Laser Dome stages light shows set to music. Show schedules and available programs can change, so check the center’s website before visiting.

The exhibits suit a range of ages, though families with children have the most activities designed around active play. Some younger children gravitate to building areas and water experiments, while older children and adults can spend time with the broader science displays. If a show is part of your plan, reserve in advance, then leave time to explore the galleries around it.
