Lake Union is a freshwater lake in Seattle, just north of downtown, where city views meet working seaplane routes and a busy mix of boats. Walk the shore paths to watch aircraft take off and land, or rent a kayak or paddleboard to see the skyline and floating homes from the water. The lake is also known for its houseboats, including the one associated with Sleepless in Seattle. For a land-based viewpoint, head to Gas Works Park, where the Space Needle is visible across the lake.

A lake shaped by ice and engineering

Lake Union

Lake Union was formed by glacial erosion around 12,000 years ago. The Duwamish people lived along its shores before the lake became part of a densely built urban area. Today, it sits between downtown Seattle and northern neighborhoods including Fremont and Wallingford.

The lake is connected to Lake Washington and Puget Sound by the Lake Washington Ship Canal. Built as part of a major engineering project in the 1910s, the canal links Seattle’s waterways and gives Lake Union a role in the city’s wider maritime network.

Houseboats, aircraft and boats on the water

Lake Union’s shoreline and water are closely tied to Seattle’s life on the water. Floating homes are among its most distinctive sights, and one houseboat is associated with the film Sleepless in Seattle. The lake also has a long aviation connection: seaplanes use its surface, and a small plaque commemorates the first flight by Mr. Boeing.

On a clear day, the lake is a place to watch seaplanes, sailboats and other craft against the city skyline. From a kayak or paddleboard, you can move past houseboats and see the city from the water. Rentals are available at several points around the lake, and tandem kayaks make it possible to paddle with a companion.

Seeing the lake from shore

You do not need to get on a boat to spend time at Lake Union. Shoreline paths bring you close to the water, with views across the lake toward the city. Gas Works Park is a useful stop for a land-based outlook, including a view of the Space Needle across the water.

The lake is also a setting for casual walks, jogging and time outdoors. Cafes and restaurants sit around the surrounding area, so a walk can be paired with a meal or coffee. If you want a quieter paddle, plan for a weekday; if you are heading out on the water, account for changing wind and bring a light layer.
