Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area is a forested park in ʻAiea, about 12 miles from Waikiki, with the historic Keaīwa Heiau, picnic areas, campsites and the ʻAiea Loop Trail. The trail passes through jungle, large trees and changing plant life, with ridgeline views along the way. The heiau is a sacred Hawaiian place of worship associated with healing, so visit it respectfully. Mud and exposed roots can make the hike slippery after rain; sturdy footwear helps. Plan a picnic or a hike, or stay at the basic campground.

Keaīwa Heiau and its history

The park takes its name from Keaīwa Heiau, a stone temple associated with healing. It was built in the 17th century, and kahuna, or priests, treated illnesses and injuries using plants, fasting and prayer. The heiau was damaged during World War II and rededicated in 1951.

The temple is a sacred place of worship in Hawaiian culture. Treat it with care, and do not disturb any offerings you encounter. The stone structure is about 49 metres long. Its setting is part of the visit: this forested park in ʻAiea also has trails, picnic areas and campsites.

Hiking the ʻAiea Loop Trail

The ʻAiea Loop Trail is the park’s main draw for a walk or hike. The route runs through forest, with large trees and changing plant life, and reaches ridgeline viewpoints. The terrain includes roots and uneven ground. Mud can make sections slippery after rain, so choose your footwear and pace with conditions in mind.

The hike is described as moderately challenging and manageable for families, including young children, though the time needed depends on stops. Allow around two to three hours for a relaxed outing. Views from the ridge and the forest itself are reasons to take your time rather than treat the route as a quick walk.

Picnics and camping

Picnic areas make it easy to add a meal outdoors after a walk. The park also has a campground for visitors who want to stay near Honolulu. Camping facilities are basic, and some tent spots are uneven, so plan for a less polished setup and choose your pitch carefully.

The park is about 12 miles from Waikiki. Arriving earlier in the day can help you avoid busier periods on the trail. If it has rained, expect muddier footing and take extra care on exposed or uneven sections.
