The Invisible Dog Art Center is a multidisciplinary arts space in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill, housed in a former factory at 57 Bergen St. Its ground floor hosts rotating exhibitions, performances and public events, with work by artists from around the world. The spacious gallery has an industrial feel and a quiet atmosphere between events. Check the calendar for markets and other happenings, or visit to see what is currently on display. Entry to the gallery is free; donations are welcome.

A factory with an unusual name

The Invisible Dog Art Center occupies a three-story former factory in Boerum Hill. The building’s earlier work gives the center its name: it was used to make belts for an invisible-dog party trick associated with Walt Disney. The novelty toy’s leash made it appear that its owner was walking a dog that could not be seen.

The arts center was established in 2009 by Lucien Zayan. Its program combines exhibitions with performances and public events, bringing contemporary art into a building that retains its industrial character.

Exhibitions, performances and studios

The ground floor is used for exhibitions, performances and public events. Exhibitions change over time and include work by artists from different parts of the world, so the displays depend on when you visit. The gallery’s open, warehouse-like space can also be used for events and pop-up markets.

Artist studios occupy the second and third floors. More than 30 artists work there across different genres. The center’s mix of public gallery space and working studios gives the building more than one role, though the studios are not described as part of a standard visitor tour.

The calendar can include events such as holiday markets and the FAD market, alongside performances and other programs. Check the center’s website to see what is scheduled during your visit.
