SculptureCenter

SculptureCenter is a contemporary art exhibition space at 44-19 Purves St in Long Island City, Queens.

SculptureCenter is a contemporary art exhibition space at 44-19 Purves St in Long Island City, Queens. Set in a converted industrial building, it pairs experimental sculpture and installations with high ceilings, brick walls and raw beams. Explore the large ground-floor room, then head downstairs to the smaller basement galleries, where the displays can feel more intimate. Admission is free, and a small outdoor patio has views of the Long Island City skyline. Exhibitions change, so the work on view varies from visit to visit.

An industrial building for changing exhibitions

SculptureCenter presents contemporary art with a focus on sculpture. It began in 1928 as an organization founded by artists and now gives emerging and established artists a place to exhibit work, including new commissions. Rather than building a permanent collection, it presents rotating exhibitions, so the artworks and installations change over time.

The center occupies a former trolley repair shop in Long Island City. Its high ceilings, exposed beams and brick walls give the galleries an industrial character that contrasts with the work on display. Exhibitions can include both large-scale pieces and smaller, more contained installations.

Two levels to explore

The ground floor has a large open room suited to bigger sculptures. The basement has smaller gallery spaces, sometimes described as catacombs, for more intimate displays. Visit both levels, since the exhibitions can make different use of each setting.

SculptureCenter sometimes holds artist talks and other special events. A small outdoor patio has benches and views of the Long Island City skyline. On weekend afternoons between May and early September, the free LIC Art Bus links SculptureCenter with nearby destinations including MoMA PS1, the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park. The shuttle runs every 45 minutes from 1 to 6 pm during that seasonal service.
