In Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, the Queens Museum pairs contemporary art and local history with its standout attraction, the Panorama of the City of New York. This room-sized model maps all five boroughs, with tiny buildings that invite a closer look. The museum also displays Tiffany glass and material from the World’s Fairs held in the park, alongside changing exhibitions. Admission is pay what you wish, so you can add a museum visit to a walk around the park and the nearby Unisphere.

The Panorama of New York City

The museum’s best-known work is a large architectural model of New York City, made for the 1964 World’s Fair. It covers all five boroughs and includes small-scale versions of the city’s buildings. The model has been updated over time, though it includes buildings completed before 1992 as well as some later additions.

Take time to scan the model for familiar places and smaller details. A light sequence moves the scene from dusk to dawn in 15 minutes. The Panorama gives a compact view of the city’s scale and layout, quite different from seeing its streets at ground level.

Art, Tiffany glass and World’s Fair history

The Queens Museum presents contemporary art, historical displays and exhibitions connected to urban life and Queens. Its permanent and long-term displays include objects from the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs, which took place in Flushing Meadows. The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany glass includes lamps, windows and other works from Tiffany Studios.

Exhibitions change, so check what is on view when you plan your visit. Alongside the Panorama and glass collection, displays have included historical photographs and a relief map of New York City’s water supply system. The mix makes the museum a useful stop for both city history and visual art.

A former World’s Fair building

The museum occupies the New York City Building, constructed for the 1939 World’s Fair. The building later housed the United Nations General Assembly from 1946 to 1950, then returned to the World’s Fair site for the 1964 event. The Queens Museum opened in 1972.

The museum stands within Flushing Meadows Corona Park, close to the Unisphere, the stainless-steel globe created for the 1964 World’s Fair. Sunday programming includes free Family Art Workshops in the afternoon; live music and other events are also held at the museum. Check the schedule if you want to plan around a particular program.
