Peristyle

The Peristyle is an open-sided, neoclassical pavilion on the south side of New Orleans’ City Park, beside a reflecting pond and Bayou Metairie. Its Ionian-style columns and the stone lions at the entrance make a striking stop on a park walk. The covered structure is also used for open-air events and wedding ceremonies, and Cafe du Monde is close by for beignets.

The pavilion and its setting

The Peristyle stands on the south side of City Park beside Bayou Metairie. Its Ionian-style columns give the open-sided pavilion a neoclassical look, while the water and surrounding greenery create a calm setting for a walk or a short stop. Stone lions guard the entrance, and moss-draped trees nearby make distinctive subjects for photographs.

The structure is covered but open to the air. A view from Goldfish Island, across the water, frames the pavilion with its reflection. The pond, paths, picnic tables and playground are also part of this area of the park.

Events and nearby stops

The Peristyle is used for open-air events and wedding ceremonies. Its columns can be lit at night, and the covered setting can be useful when rain is a concern. Wedding ceremonies can bring activity to the pavilion, so a weekday visit is a practical choice if you want a quieter look or time for photos.

Cafe du Monde is nearby, where you can stop for beignets while exploring City Park. Orders come three at a time and are dusted generously with icing sugar, so take care if you are walking with them.
