At Maʻalaea Harbor, Maui Ocean Center brings Hawaiian marine life into view through indoor and outdoor exhibits. Walk through the clear tunnel beneath sharks, rays and tropical fish, pause at the living coral displays, and see green sea turtles at Turtle Lagoon. The 3D humpback whale experience and talks in the water tunnel add context to the animals and their habitat. With interactive exhibits and plenty to explore, it suits families and anyone who wants to learn about Hawaiʻi’s ocean life without snorkeling.

Maui Ocean Center is in Maʻalaea, near the harbor, and focuses on marine life from Hawaiian waters. Its exhibits cover coral reefs, turtles, sharks, rays and tropical fish, with indoor and outdoor areas to explore. The displays connect the animals to the ocean ecosystems they depend on and to local conservation work.

The Living Reef displays living Pacific coral, including native coral species. Shallow and deeper reef exhibits give you different views of reef environments, while interpretive displays add information about Hawaiʻi’s marine life and ocean habitats. Take your time here if you want to read as well as look.

Walk through the Open Ocean tunnel

The clear acrylic tunnel runs through a large Open Ocean tank. Sharks, manta rays and schools of fish move around and overhead as you walk through it. Pause along the way to watch the animals from different angles rather than hurrying straight through.

Turtle Lagoon brings Hawaiian green sea turtles into view from dry land. Other displays include tide pools and tanks with marine animals found in Hawaiian waters. The center also has interactive experiences, including a touch tank, and talks in the water tunnel where a diver discusses the animals in the tank.

The 3D humpback whale experience

A 3D experience about humpback whales is shown in a dome-style theater. It uses immersive visuals to bring you close to the whales and adds another perspective to the center’s exhibits on ocean life. One visitor tip is to arrive before the scheduled show rather than after it begins; a visitor account reports that showings were at half-hour intervals, but check current details when planning your visit.

The center’s educational displays also cover local ocean ecosystems and conservation. Exhibits include information about restoration work connected with Kahoʻolawe. The talks and interpretive material are useful additions if you want more than a close look at the animals.

Planning your visit

Plan for around two to three hours to see the exhibits at a relaxed pace. An early start can mean fewer people in the galleries. Comfortable shoes are useful as you move between the indoor and outdoor areas, and advance ticket purchase is recommended by the center.

The aquarium is at 192 Maalaea Road in Wailuku. On-site amenities include a café, gift shop and paid parking. The center is family-friendly, with interactive displays that can hold children’s attention as well as exhibits for adults. If you want to focus on the animals, set aside time for the tunnel, Turtle Lagoon and reef displays before browsing the other areas.
