Malibu Pier extends into the Pacific beside Surfrider Beach, with views of the coast, surfers and, at times, dolphins. Built in 1905, it now has fishing, shops and two Malibu Farm dining spots: a restaurant near the entrance and a casual cafe at the far end. Walk to the end for a look back toward the beach and mountains, or pause to watch anglers at the rail. The pier is a calm stop for a coastal stroll, especially as its lights come on around dusk.

A pier built for the Rindge ranch

Malibu Pier

Malibu Pier was built in 1905 as a private port for Frederick Hastings Rindge, who owned much of the land that later became Malibu. Ships carried ranch supplies to the pier and took agricultural goods, including grain and fruit, back out to sea. The pier’s original role was tied to transport; today, people come to walk, fish, shop and eat.

The timber pier has been rebuilt and restored over the years after storm damage. Its twin white towers and wooden walkway remain distinctive features, and the structure extends into the Pacific beside Surfrider Beach.

Surfers, fishing and the view

From the pier, you can watch surfers at Surfrider Beach and look along the coast toward the Santa Monica Mountains. Surfrider is known for a three-point break, and the long rides have helped make the beach a landmark in California surf culture.

Anglers fish from the pier deck. You can cast without a fishing permit, and nearby shops rent rods and sell bait. Fish mentioned for the area include halibut in summer, along with corbina and mackerel at other times of year. You may also spot dolphins from the pier, though sightings are not guaranteed.

Malibu Farm at both ends

Malibu Farm has two locations on the pier. The restaurant is near the entrance, close to Pacific Coast Highway, and has table service. The cafe is at the far end and uses walk-up ordering, with indoor and outdoor seating. The cafe is casual and does not take reservations; dinner reservations are available at the restaurant.

The pier also has shops, including a place to browse surf gear and beach gifts. If you only want the coastal views, you can walk the pier and sit on a bench without buying a meal.

Continuing on to the lagoon

A staircase near the entrance leads down to the sand. Walk north along the beach to reach Surfrider Beach and Malibu Lagoon, where shallow water and bird-watching are among the nearby draws. The Adamson House, a Spanish-style beach home built in 1929, is also close to the pier and overlooks the lagoon area.
