Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign sits on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills, above Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Sign sits on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills, above Los Angeles. First erected in 1923 to advertise a housing development, it originally read “Hollywoodland”; the last four letters came down in 1949. You can see it from spots around the city, including Lake Hollywood Park and Griffith Observatory, or hike nearby trails for views from the hills. The letters are fenced off, so plan on viewing them from a distance. Go early for clearer skies and fewer people, or near sunset for softer light.

From Hollywoodland to Hollywood

The sign went up on Mount Lee in 1923 to advertise a real estate development called Hollywoodland. It was intended as a temporary display, but it remained after the development campaign ended. In 1949, the final four letters were removed, leaving the name now associated with Los Angeles and the entertainment industry.

The letters are about 45 feet high. The sign was rebuilt in steel in 1978 and repainted in 2005. Its hillside position makes it visible from many parts of the city, though the view and photo angle depend on where you stop.

Where to view the sign

Lake Hollywood Park is a popular place to pause, take photos and look up toward the hillside. Griffith Observatory also gives views of the sign alongside the city. Other suggested viewpoints include the Hollywood Bowl Overlook on Mulholland Drive and the area around Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

The sign stands behind fences and security measures, and visitors cannot climb up to or touch the letters. Hiking routes lead to viewpoints near the sign, including places behind it, but access remains restricted. The aim is to see the landmark from a permitted distance, not to reach the letters themselves.

Hiking in the Hollywood Hills

Several routes climb toward Mount Lee, with different distances and elevation gains. Brush Canyon Trail is listed at 6.4 miles with 1,050 feet of elevation gain; Hollyridge Trail is 3.5 miles with 750 feet of gain; and the route from Innsdale Drive is 4.6 miles with 750 feet of gain. A separate account puts the walk from Canyon Drive at about six miles round trip. Route details and totals vary, so choose a trail based on your ability and check current conditions before setting out.

Some paths are steep, exposed and dusty, with little shade. Wear proper walking shoes, carry water and a hat, and take care in hot weather. For a shorter outing, choose a viewpoint instead of a full hike. Parking can be limited near residential trailheads, so rideshare may make arrival easier.

Planning your visit

Early morning is a useful choice if you want to avoid busier periods and reduce the chance of mist obscuring the view. Near sunset, the light can suit photos; from Lake Hollywood Park, the sign and the city are also visible after dark. Evening visits can be breezy, so bring a jacket.

The Hollywood Sign is an outdoor landmark rather than a site you enter. Allow time for the walk or hike you choose, and keep the route and weather in mind when planning your stop.
