Lumahaʻi Beach is a broad crescent of golden sand on Kauaʻi’s North Shore, where Lumahaʻi Stream meets the ocean beneath tropical greenery. It is known as a filming location for the movie South Pacific, and its waves and rocky shoreline make a striking backdrop for a walk or a picnic. The stream can be calmer than the sea, but strong currents and rough surf make ocean swimming dangerous. Come for the scenery, and take care near the river mouth.

Lumaha'i Beach

Lumahaʻi Beach is on Kauaʻi’s North Shore, west of Hanalei. Its wide sweep of sand, green backdrop and rocky shoreline appeared in the 1958 movie South Pacific, including the scene associated with the song “Wash That Man Right Out of Your Hair.” The film connection adds a point of interest, but the coast itself is the main reason to stop: the beach has an undeveloped feel, with tropical vegetation behind the sand and ocean views along the shore.

Two stretches of beach share the name, divided by Lumahaʻi Stream and a rocky outcrop. The stream runs from the mountains to the sea, creating a calmer place to wade than the open water. Trees near the parking area provide shade when you want a break from the sun.

Sea conditions and safety

Lumahaʻi is best approached as a scenic beach, not a dependable place to swim. The shorebreak can be powerful, and strong currents are a serious hazard. Conditions can be calmer in summer, but that does not make the ocean safe at all times. Take particular care at the point where the stream meets the sea, and stay out of the water there.

The stream is often calmer than the ocean, but conditions vary. Keep children close and do not treat the river mouth as a safe swimming area. In summer, lava-rock pools may provide places to float when conditions allow, but check the water carefully before entering.

Getting down to the sand

A short, relatively gentle trail leads from Northern Hanalei Highway to the beach. Parking is shaded, but spaces can fill, so arriving earlier can help if you want a spot beneath the trees. Once on the sand, you can walk along the shore, watch waves break against the rocks or find a place to sit with a view of the stream and ocean.

There are no portable toilets or fresh water at the beach. Plan accordingly before heading down, and bring what you need for your time on the sand. The stream offers fresh water flowing toward the shore, but it is not a substitute for facilities.
