Manitou Cliff Dwellings

Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a walk-through reconstruction of Ancestral Pueblo homes beneath a red sandstone overhang in Manitou Springs.

Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a walk-through reconstruction of Ancestral Pueblo homes beneath a red sandstone overhang in Manitou Springs. The dwellings were moved from McElmo Canyon in southwestern Colorado and reassembled here in the early 1900s. You can explore the rooms at your own pace, then visit the on-site museums to see pottery, tools and other artifacts. The hands-on layout suits families, and reaching the site does not require a strenuous hike. Go early or on a weekday for a quieter visit.

Why the dwellings are in Manitou Springs

The cliff dwellings were originally located near McElmo Canyon in southwestern Colorado, close to the Mesa Verde area. They were dismantled and moved to Manitou Springs in the early 1900s, then reassembled and opened to the public in 1907. The relocation was intended to protect the structures from looting.

This is a reconstruction, not an original dwelling in its original location. The rebuilt rooms give you a chance to move through the layout and look closely at the architecture, but the site’s history also includes that early-20th-century move. The structures are associated with Ancestral Pueblo people and date back roughly 800 to 1,000 years.

Walking through the rooms

The dwellings sit beneath a red sandstone overhang and are arranged as a complex of rooms. On the self-guided visit, you can go inside, move from room to room and touch the structures. That access makes the site more hands-on than archaeological places where visitors must keep their distance. It can also help children engage with the layout as they explore.

Allow time to look around rather than treating the dwellings as a single viewpoint. The reconstruction includes about 40 rooms, and the experience is built around moving through them. It is an accessible stop for travelers who want to explore historic structures without a strenuous hike.

Museums and other features

Two museums on-site add context to the dwellings. Displays include items such as pottery and tools, along with other artifacts and exhibits about Pueblo life. The museum building is three stories tall and designed in a Pueblo style.

Beyond the rooms and museums, the grounds include reproductions of Pueblo architecture, including a mesa-top homestead and a baking oven. A nature walk has labeled plants. Together, these areas give you more to explore than the cliffside structures alone, though the dwellings remain the main focus of a short visit.
