Rockefeller Memorial Chapel

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel stands at 5850 S Woodlawn Ave on the University of Chicago campus.

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel stands at 5850 S Woodlawn Ave on the University of Chicago campus. Its Gothic Revival design by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue is full of carved stone and wood details, with an intricate ceiling to look up at inside. The chapel has two spaces that host performances and events, and its 72-bell carillon is among the world’s largest. If the tower walkway is open, 271 stone steps lead to views over the campus and Hyde Park. A lavender garden adds a quieter stop outside.

Goodhue’s Gothic Revival design

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel

Architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed Rockefeller Memorial Chapel as a modern interpretation of Gothic Revival. The building’s stonework and wood carving reward a slower look: notice the carved details and the intricate ceiling as you move through the chapel. Its scale is part of the experience, with the tower rising 200 feet above the University of Chicago campus.

The chapel’s design draws attention upward and through the building. Take time to look closely at the stone sculptures on the tower as well as the interior craftsmanship.

Carillon, performances and the tower

The chapel has a 72-bell carillon, one of the largest in the world, and hosts concerts and other performances. Events take place in two chapels, with different artists appearing there. Check the schedule if you want to plan your visit around a performance or carillon concert.

The tower walkway is reached by climbing 271 spiral stone steps. From the top, the view takes in the University of Chicago campus and Hyde Park. The climb is a substantial part of a visit, so consider whether the stairs suit you before setting out.

The garden and October open house

Outside, the lavender garden provides a quieter place to pause after seeing the chapel. Open House Chicago weekend in October is another opportunity to explore the building. The chapel is at 5850 S Woodlawn Ave; Promontory Point in Burnham Park is a nearby stop to add to your plans.
