Pullman National Historical Park

Pullman National Historical Park preserves a planned industrial town on Chicago’s Far South Side, built by George M.

Pullman National Historical Park preserves a planned industrial town on Chicago’s Far South Side, built by George M. Pullman for workers at his railcar company. Start at the visitor center for exhibits on the town, the Pullman Company and the labor movement, then walk through the surrounding residential district to see historic buildings. A ranger-led tour at 1 pm adds context, and the Junior Ranger booklet gives children an activity to follow. The park is free to visit, and the neighborhood is still home to residents.

A planned town for railcar workers

George M. Pullman built the community in the 1880s for employees of the Pullman’s Palace Car Company, which made luxury railway cars. The development included more than 1,000 homes and public buildings. Pullman intended it as a model industrial town, designed to attract skilled workers and support the company’s operations.

The plan did not prevent labor conflict. In 1894, workers walked out after the company cut wages without reducing rents. The town’s history connects industrial growth with the working conditions and disputes that shaped the labor movement.

The visitor center and neighborhood

The visitor center’s exhibits cover several aspects of Pullman’s history. Staff can help you decide how to explore the landmark, and a walking map is useful for seeing the district beyond the museum. Historic buildings remain among the homes and streets of an active residential community; not every building is open to enter.

The park also interprets the history of Black Pullman porters and their role in advancing workers’ rights. A Junior Ranger booklet gives children a way to engage with the exhibits and the site.
