Lincoln Park Zoo is a free, family-friendly zoo in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, with animal habitats set among gardens and leafy paths. Its collection ranges from lions and gorillas to penguins, giraffes and reptiles, so you can shape a visit around the animals you most want to see. Stop at the Regenstein Center for African Apes or the reptile house, then walk the Nature Boardwalk for pond and skyline views. Children can also explore the zoo’s farm and play areas. Plan for a few hours, or longer if you want to see the grounds at an easy pace.

Lincoln Park Zoo began in 1868 with a pair of swans. It has grown into a city zoo with animals from a range of habitats, while remaining free to enter. Its grounds sit within Lincoln Park, where animal exhibits share space with lawns, gardens and paths.

The zoo is compact enough to explore at a relaxed pace, but a full visit can take several hours. You can focus on a few habitats or make a longer circuit, stopping at animal exhibits and outdoor spaces along the way. Cafes and food vendors are available on site, and visitors can bring their own food.

Animal habitats to look for

At the Regenstein Center for African Apes, indoor and outdoor spaces house chimpanzees and western lowland gorillas. The habitat includes features such as bamboo stands, termite mounds and climbing vines. Nearby, the Regenstein Macaque Forest recreates a setting where Japanese macaques can bathe in hot springs.

The Pepper Family Wildlife Center is home to lions. For smaller animals, head to the glass-domed Regenstein Small Mammal and Reptile House, where you may find reptiles such as pythons as well as mammals such as sloths. Regenstein African Journey includes giraffes and black rhinos. Animals can be out of sight at times, so keep moving through the grounds if a habitat is quiet.

Places for children and a walk by the pond

The Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo focuses on wildlife from North American woodlands, including wolves, beavers and otters. Its Houston Family Play Treehouse gives children a place to climb, with a soft safety net around the elevated structure. The zoo also has Farm-in-the-Zoo, where demonstrations and scheduled activities introduce children to farm animals and their care.

For a change of pace, follow the Nature Boardwalk around South Pond. Its pavilion frames views of the water and Chicago’s skyline, and the paths make a pleasant route between outdoor spaces and animal exhibits. The nearby Lincoln Park Conservatory and Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum can also be combined with a zoo visit.
