The conservatory’s four display houses are the Palm House, Fern Room, Orchid House and Show House. Each focuses on different plants, so the walk moves between tall palms, ferns, orchids and seasonal arrangements. The Show House changes with the displays through the year, including flower shows.

Plant collections include species from around the world, along with cacti and succulents. Labels help explain where plants come from, giving you something to read as you move through the rooms. The indoor garden is a useful stop in cold or rainy weather, as the collections are housed beneath glass.

The first greenhouse on this site dates to 1877. The current conservatory was built between 1890 and 1895, during Chicago’s Victorian era. Architect Joseph L. Silsbee designed the glasshouse, whose rooms now shelter thousands of plants.

Among the notable specimens are an extensive fern collection, dozens of orchid varieties and a rubber tree that reaches 50 feet. The tree is more than a century old. The Fern Room’s collection includes ancient ferns, while the Orchid House brings together a range of orchid varieties.
