Grant Park is a large lakefront green space in central Chicago, stretching across the Loop and connecting landmarks including Buckingham Fountain, Millennium Park and the Museum Campus. Come for a walk, a picnic or a pause between museums, with skyline and Lake Michigan views along the way. The fountain is the park’s best-known stop, and the nearby Agora sculpture adds another point of interest. In summer, Grant Park also hosts major festivals and outdoor music events.

A green route through downtown

Grant Park
Grant Park

Grant Park occupies a broad stretch of Chicago’s lakefront in the central business district and Loop. Its grounds include or connect to several distinct destinations, among them Millennium Park, Maggie Daley Park, Buckingham Fountain and the Museum Campus. The Art Institute of Chicago is another major cultural stop beside the park.

That layout makes Grant Park useful as part of a wider downtown walk. You can pause on the lawns or at a picnic spot, then continue toward a museum, another park or the lakefront. Public restrooms are available in the park.

Buckingham Fountain and the Agora

The Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain is the park’s signature landmark. Its water display takes place at the top of each hour from May through October and lasts about 20 minutes. Shows after dusk add lights and music. The fountain was modelled on one at Versailles and has four pairs of seahorses representing the four states around Lake Michigan. Its central jet can send water 150 feet into the air.

Agora is another work to look for during a walk through the park. The open space and seating also give you room to stop between sights without leaving the grounds.

Festivals and outdoor music

Grant Park is a venue for large public events, including Lollapalooza and the Taste of Chicago. The Grant Park Music Festival brings outdoor classical concerts to the summer calendar. Event seasons change the feel of the park, so a visit during a festival is different from a quieter walk on an ordinary day.

If you are planning around an event, check its current details separately before setting out. For a calmer visit, choose a time outside peak hours and focus on the fountain, sculpture and lakefront paths.
