Fort Independence stands on Castle Island in South Boston, beside walking paths, beaches and green space along Boston Harbor. The gray granite fort you see today was built between 1834 and 1851, and earlier forts occupied the site. Walk around the exterior for harbor views and a close look at its five-pointed shape. Free guided tours provide access inside when they are running, but the interior is closed much of the time. Castle Island also has picnic spots and a playground, making it an easy outdoor stop with children.
A succession of forts on Castle Island

Fort Independence occupies a site with a long military history. The first fort here dates to the 17th century, and the structure now standing is the eighth fort on the site. Earlier versions were rebuilt over time; British troops destroyed one as they left Boston during the Revolutionary War.
The present fort was constructed between 1834 and 1851. Its five-pointed plan and gray granite walls give it a distinct outline above the surrounding park. Castle Island, once separated from the mainland, was connected to it in 1928.
Seeing the fort and its surroundings

You can walk around the fort's exterior and see the granite walls from close by. Paths around Castle Island follow the waterfront, with views across Boston Harbor and toward the harbor islands. Boats pass through the view, and planes approach Logan Airport across the water.
The park setting gives the visit room to stretch into a longer walk. Castle Island covers 22 acres and has paths for walking, biking and running, as well as beaches, green space and a playground. Picnic spots make it possible to pause between the fort and the shoreline.
Getting inside
The fort's interior is not open for casual, self-guided visits. Access is through free guided tours when they are scheduled. Tour availability is limited and can change, so check ahead before planning around an interior visit. Sunday tours are listed from noon to 3 pm; some Thursday access has also been reported, but it is not a dependable schedule.
If the fort is closed, the exterior walk and the surrounding waterfront remain accessible as a separate outing. Parking is available, though it can be challenging on busy days. A short walk around the grounds takes in the fort, paths and harbor views.
