Hōlei Sea Arch is a volcanic rock formation on the coast at the end of Chain of Craters Road in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The drive is part of the visit: it crosses old lava flows and ends at cliffs above the Pacific, where waves break against the shore. From the viewing area, look for the arch rising from the coastline; it is about 90 feet tall and sits some distance away. Sunset can bring softer light, and sea caves along the route add another stop.

The drive to the coast

Chain of Craters Road runs through volcanic terrain to the coast at the southern end of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The lava fields are a central part of the journey, with pullouts and viewpoints along the route. The road’s former continuation along the coast was buried by lava flows, leaving Hōlei Sea Arch at its end.

Give the drive time in your itinerary. A round trip takes about an hour and a half without rushing, before allowing extra time for stops. There are limited facilities in this remote area, so bring water and snacks.

A changing coastline

The arch is a natural opening in lava cliffs, shaped by ocean erosion. It rises about 90 feet above the Pacific, with waves breaking along the rocky shore below. The rock comes from an ancient lava flow; accounts place its age at about 550 years, while the arch itself formed through later erosion.

Sea arches are temporary features. Waves continue to wear away the rock, and the coastline changes over time. The viewing area provides a distant view of the formation and the surrounding ocean.

Viewpoints and access

At the end of the road, follow the park’s directions to the designated viewing area. Access arrangements have changed: a newer viewpoint was established set back from the cliff, and reports also note periods when the overlook or trail was closed. Check current park conditions before your visit and use only open routes.

Sea caves along the way provide additional coastal viewpoints. Sunset is a useful time to plan for softer light, but allow enough time to make the return drive. Bring hand sanitizer and water, since facilities are limited.
