Aynalıkavak Pavilion

Aynalıkavak Pavilion in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district is the last surviving part of the former Tersane Palace, also known as the Shipyard Palace.

Aynalıkavak Pavilion in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district is the last surviving part of the former Tersane Palace, also known as the Shipyard Palace. Its rooms preserve classical Ottoman architecture and ornate interior details, while the terraced garden offers a quieter place to pause. Inside, look for Ottoman-era musical instruments; audio guides are available in English, Arabic and Turkish. There is also a garden cafe where you can sit with coffee. The pavilion is a good choice for Ottoman history and architecture without the crowds associated with Topkapi Palace.

Aynalıkavak Pavilion

Aynalıkavak Pavilion is the only surviving part of the former Aynalıkavak Palace, also called Tersane Palace because of its proximity to Istanbul’s shipyard. The larger complex was one of the Ottoman Empire’s palaces in the city.

The site has an earlier history: after Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror took Istanbul, the grounds were known as Tersane Hasbahçesi. The area had previously served as a place of recreation and rest for Byzantine emperors. Accounts differ on when the palace complex began. Some place much of its construction in the 17th century; others say it started earlier and continued over several centuries.

The pavilion’s rooms show classical Ottoman architecture and carefully preserved interior decoration. Ottoman-era musical instruments add another point of interest. Audio guides in English, Arabic and Turkish provide context as you explore.

Outside, the terraced garden offers a calmer setting for a pause. The garden cafe serves coffee, and you can enjoy the garden without entering the pavilion. The site is often a quieter alternative to Istanbul’s more crowded palace visits.
