Wat Samret is a Buddhist temple west of Ban Hua Thanon on Koh Samui, valued for its quiet setting and more than a century of history. Inside, look for a seated Buddha carved from solid marble in the Mandalay style, unusual in southern Thailand, and a hall filled with Buddha images, including a large reclining figure. Small shrines and older stupas are scattered around the grounds. The temple remains a place for local religious practice, including offerings made to monks.

One of Wat Samret’s distinctive sights is a seated Buddha carved from solid marble in the Mandalay style. This form is more familiar in India and northern Thailand than in the south, giving the statue a particular interest on Koh Samui.

Another hall contains a reclining Buddha, surrounded by other Buddhist figures. A separate room holds a large collection of Buddha images, with a prominent statue on one wall and more than 80 figures around it. Take time to look through the rooms rather than stopping at the first statue.

Small shrines are spread across the temple grounds, and older stupas stand at the back of the site. Walking around lets you see these quieter corners as well as the main halls.

Wat Samret is also a place where local people take part in Buddhist religious activities. Offerings of water and rice to monks are among the ways people make merit here. If you visit during a religious activity, observe respectfully and follow the lead of those taking part.
