A museum built around understanding

The Museum of World Religions is in Yonghe, in New Taipei City, south of Taipei. Venerable Hsin Tao, a Buddhist monk, founded it through the Ling Jiou Mountain Buddhist Foundation. Its purpose is to introduce religious traditions and their connections, and to encourage understanding among people of different faiths.

The exhibitions cover Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Taoism, Sikhism, Shinto, Judaism, Taiwanese Indigenous beliefs, ancient Egyptian religion and Mayan beliefs. The museum presents these traditions side by side rather than setting out to promote Buddhism. Sacred objects and explanatory displays give the visit an educational focus.

Detailed scale models of religious sites are among the museum’s distinctive displays. They include the Dome of the Rock, the Golden Temple and Chartres Cathedral. Tiny cameras allow you to view the interiors of the models, so take time to look beyond their exterior details.

Multimedia presentations share the wisdom of religious figures, while the permanent exhibition on world religions sits alongside changing spiritual exhibitions. QR codes provide English descriptions for further context. Staff can also offer additional information about the exhibits.

The approach to the exhibition area is part of the visit: a long corridor leads towards the edge of the building, with water curtains along the way. Take the elevator to the exhibitions, passing a walkway lined with quotations about life’s journey. Allow at least three to four hours if you want time to explore the displays in depth.
