On Lake Lucerne beside the main train station, the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, or KKL Luzern, combines a concert hall, conference spaces and an art museum. Jean Nouvel’s modern design is marked by a broad roof that projects over the building and waterfront. The concert hall is known for its orchestral acoustics, and the programme ranges from classical concerts to films performed with a live orchestra. Before an event, you can also choose from on-site dining, from a bistro and bar to a Michelin-starred restaurant.

The KKL Luzern stands at Europaplatz, next to Lucerne’s main train station and directly beside Lake Lucerne. French architect Jean Nouvel designed the building, which opened in 1998. Its broad, thin roof extends over the structure and towards the water, giving the complex a distinctive profile along the lakefront.

The building’s modern architecture differs from Lucerne’s older streets and buildings. Its position also brings the lake into the experience of visiting: views of the water and surrounding mountains are visible from the complex, including from the balcony. The KKL is a useful stop for architecture as well as for an event, although access to particular areas can depend on what is taking place.

Concerts and the hall

The concert hall is a central part of the KKL and is especially valued for its acoustics for orchestral music. Its proportions, including the relationship between its height, width and length, were designed to support the sound. The hall opened with a concert by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1998.

The programme includes classical performances by orchestras, conductors and solo musicians, alongside special events. Some film screenings are accompanied by a live orchestra, bringing the score into the room as the movie plays. Check the schedule for the event you want to attend, and consider buying tickets in advance. For a concert, the balcony is a place to take in the lake and mountain views during the interval.

More than a concert venue

KKL Luzern is a multifunctional complex, with spaces for conferences and meetings as well as cultural events. It also houses the Lucerne Museum of Art, whose collection includes contemporary art. The museum occupies space on the building’s fourth floor.

Dining is available on site, with options ranging from a bistro and bar to a Michelin-starred restaurant. If you are attending a concert or another event, arriving early gives you time to eat before it begins. The venue is close to the station, so it is straightforward to reach by train; paid parking is available for those arriving by car.
