Set inside the former Conde Duque barracks in central Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Art presents works from the historical avant-garde to more recent art. Its collection includes paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings and graphic works, with displays that change over time. Look for the reconstructed study of writer Ramón Gómez de la Serna, a key figure in Madrid’s early 20th-century avant-garde, alongside mixed-media pieces and video installations. Admission is free, and the surrounding area has independent cafés and restaurants for a stop before or after your visit.

Art inside Conde Duque

The museum occupies part of the former Conde Duque barracks, a historic complex in central Madrid. Its collection brings together painting, sculpture, photography, drawing and graphic works, spanning the historical avant-garde of the early 20th century through to more recent art.

Displays include large-scale works, mixed media and sculpture. The galleries are relatively small, and the exhibition mix can change, so check the current programme if you have a particular artist or subject in mind. Video installations have also been shown in the building’s underground cellar.

The study of Ramón Gómez de la Serna

One of the museum’s distinctive displays is a reconstruction of the study of Ramón Gómez de la Serna, a writer associated with Madrid’s artistic avant-garde in the first third of the 20th century. The installation gives the collection a direct link to the city’s literary and artistic life.

Other works and displays have included pieces connected with the avant-garde, tapestries, and an artwork made from rifle stocks. The upper levels hold galleries, and the courtyard provides a route across the former barracks complex.
