Garajonay National Park covers the mountainous centre of La Gomera, with laurel forest, steep ravines and trails through several kinds of vegetation. Laurel forest covers about 70 percent of the park, and the island’s highest point is at Garajonay. Trade winds create a persistent sea of clouds and humid conditions on the upper slopes, so views can disappear into mist. Choose a route to suit your time and fitness, and bring warm, waterproof clothing for walks at higher elevations.

Laurel forest and the sea of clouds

Laurel forest covers about 70 percent of Garajonay National Park. This type of forest once covered much of southern Europe, but now survives in a small number of places, including Garajonay and Tenerife’s Anaga Biosphere Reserve.

The park’s upper slopes have a humid climate shaped by the trade winds. Moist air from the north meets the mountain terrain, creating a sea of clouds and a form of horizontal rain. The resulting damp conditions support the park’s lush vegetation. Mist can also obscure viewpoints, so check the forecast if seeing the surrounding landscape is a priority.

Choosing a trail

Routes pass through different vegetation and vary in difficulty, giving walkers options for different schedules and abilities. Clear trail markings help with navigation, and the park’s terrain includes mountains, valleys and steep ravines.

For help choosing a route, stop at the visitor centre in Agulo. Its small exhibit covers the park’s forests and trails, and staff can help match a walk to your available time and experience. If you plan to explore beyond a brief walk, set aside half a day or more. Conditions at higher elevations can be cooler than elsewhere on the island, so pack warm clothing and waterproof gear.
