On the main avenue in Puerto de las Nieves, Agaete, this small white hermitage sits against a backdrop of volcanic rock and mountains. Its plain exterior gives way to a wooden ceiling, maritime details and model ships inside. The main reason to step in is the 16th-century Flemish triptych of the Virgin and Child, attributed to Joos van Cleve. The chapel honours Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and offers a quiet stop while exploring the port.

A chapel at Puerto de las Nieves

The hermitage stands on the main avenue of Puerto de las Nieves, in Agaete. Fishermen’s homes grew around the chapel, which became a focal point in the port. Its white walls and simple form sit close to the dark volcanic rock and the mountains behind the town.

The chapel is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. Its history reaches back to the 16th century, when it was built in her honour.

The triptych and maritime details

Inside, look for the Flemish triptych of the Virgin and Child, attributed to the 16th-century painter Joos van Cleve. The artwork is dedicated to the Virgen de las Nieves and is considered an important work of sacred art on the island.

The interior also has a wooden ceiling and model ships displayed on the walls. These details connect the small chapel’s devotional art with its coastal setting. Opening is limited to weekend mornings, so check the schedule if seeing the interior is central to your visit.
