El Lago Verde, also called Charco de los Clicos, is a saltwater lagoon in El Golfo, on Lanzarote’s south-west coast. Its green water comes from marine algae and microorganisms; around it, black volcanic sand, rust-red rock and the blue Atlantic create a striking scene. A short walk from the free car park brings you to viewpoints for photos and a closer look at the landscape. There is no ticket charge. The spot can fill with tour groups, so plan for a quieter visit early or later in the day.

Why the lagoon is green

Charco de los Clicos sits inside a volcanic crater open to the sea. Its saltwater takes on a green color from marine algae and microorganisms, including Ruppia maritima. The lagoon is also known as El Lago Verde, the Green Lake and Charco Verde, names used for the same place.

The contrast is especially clear from the surrounding viewpoints: green water, black volcanic sand, red-toned rock and the blue ocean meet in a compact coastal setting.

Getting a view

The lagoon is in El Golfo, a small fishing village on Lanzarote’s south-west coast. A free car park is close by, and the viewpoints are reached by a short walk. There is no direct route down to the water, so plan to see the lagoon from above.

Tour buses can bring crowds, and the exposed coast can be windy. An early or late visit can be quieter. Toilets and a coffee shop are nearby, and fish restaurants in El Golfo make a natural stop after seeing the coast.
