La Pedrera, or Casa Milà, is an apartment building by Antoni Gaudí on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona’s Eixample district. Its pale stone exterior bends around the corner in broad waves, with wrought-iron balconies tracing the façade. Inside, the visit includes courtyards, a furnished apartment, an attic exhibition about Gaudí’s work and the rooftop, where sculptural chimneys rise among the roof paths. The building’s flowing forms make it a rewarding stop for anyone interested in Catalan Modernisme or architecture.

A residence unlike its neighbours

Casa Milà was commissioned by businessman Pere Milà and his wife, Roser Segimon, as a home for the couple with apartments for rent. Antoni Gaudí designed it between 1906 and 1912. It was his final private residential project, before he devoted himself to the Sagrada Família.

The building’s popular name, La Pedrera, means “the quarry” in Catalan. The nickname refers to the rugged look of its stone exterior. Its unconventional appearance drew ridicule when it was new; today, the building is recognised as one of Gaudí’s defining works. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Stone, iron and natural forms

The façade curves along the Passeig de Gràcia corner without the straight, regular lines associated with many apartment blocks. Gaudí drew on forms found in nature, creating a surface that appears to flow around the building. Wrought-iron work adds detail to the balconies and windows; some of the shapes suggest twisting plants or sea forms.

The stone façade is self-supporting, an unusual structural approach for its time. The design also makes room for two interior courtyards, which bring daylight into the building. Look up from the courtyard spaces to see how the walls and openings shape the light inside.

The apartment and attic exhibition

The visit includes a former apartment arranged with furniture and objects from the early 20th century. It gives a sense of the domestic setting within the building, alongside the more unusual architectural details. Curved arches, columns and stained-glass windows are among the interior elements to look for.

Above the apartment, the attic houses Espai Gaudí, an exhibition about the architect and his work. Models and plans help explain how Gaudí developed his designs. The attic’s repeated arches also make the structure itself part of the display. Together, the apartment and exhibition connect the building’s residential purpose with the ideas behind its design.

The rooftop details

The roof is among the most distinctive parts of Casa Milà. Chimneys, ventilation towers and skylights rise above the roof paths in sculptural forms. Some chimneys have been nicknamed “witch scarers”; their unusual profiles are easy to spot as you move across the terrace.

From the rooftop, you can look out over Barcelona and the Eixample district. Take time to notice how the roof structures combine practical functions with Gaudí’s sculptural approach. The interior visit and the roof offer complementary views: one reveals how the building works as a home, the other how its functional elements became part of its visual design.
