Montjuïc is a hill in southwest Barcelona, above the port, with gardens, viewpoints, museums and sites from the 1992 Olympic Games. Come for broad views over the city and sea, then choose a route through the grounds: see the Olympic Stadium, visit Montjuïc Castle or explore gardens such as the cactus garden. The cable car gives you an aerial view, while walking paths connect many of the sights. The hill is spread out, so pick a few stops or set aside a full day to explore more.

A hill shaped by the 1929 exhibition

Montjuïc rises above Barcelona’s commercial port, with gardens, cultural sites and sports venues spread across its slopes. The 1929 International Exhibition led to extensive development on the hill. Several buildings from that period remain landmarks, including the Palau Nacional, now home to the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

The hill’s attractions are spread out, so a visit can be as focused or extensive as you choose. You might spend time at one museum and a viewpoint, or combine gardens, Olympic sites and the castle across a longer day.

Gardens and viewpoints

Paths lead through landscaped gardens and green spaces, including the Greek Theatre Gardens and Laribal Gardens. The cactus garden is another distinct stop. Viewpoints around Montjuïc look across Barcelona, the port and the sea; the view changes with your position on the hill.

The steps outside the National Art Museum of Catalonia are also a place to pause for a city view. For a quieter break, the Greek Theatre Gardens have a rose garden and terraced viewing area.

Olympic sites and museums

Montjuïc was the setting for many events during the 1992 Olympic Games. The Olympic Stadium and nearby sports venues remain among the hill’s major landmarks. The area also holds several museums, including the Joan Miró Foundation and the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

The museum in the Palau Nacional is known for its collection of Romanesque Catalan art. The Joan Miró Foundation is dedicated to the Catalan artist’s work. Choose your museum stops based on your interests, as there is more to see on the hill than one visit can comfortably cover.

Getting up the hill

You can explore Montjuïc on foot or use public transport and the cable cars. The walk uphill can be steep and include many stairs. One route combines the funicular from Paral·lel to Parc de Montjuïc with the Telefèric de Montjuïc to the summit. Another cable-car ride links the hill with the port area, so check which route fits your plans before setting out.

The cable car gives you a view over the city as you climb. If you would rather walk down, some routes from the upper area are manageable for people who are reasonably fit.

Plan around the weather

Montjuïc has exposed stretches, and summer heat can make walking between sights tiring. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen on warm days. Facilities near the top are limited, so families with young children may find a visit more comfortable in cooler weather.

Sunrise and sunset are suggested times for enjoying the views. A few hours works for a short visit, while seeing several gardens, museums and Olympic sites can take much of the day.
