War Memorial of Korea

The War Memorial of Korea in Seoul’s Yongsan District traces the peninsula’s military history, from ancient conflicts to the Korean War and later wars.

The War Memorial of Korea in Seoul’s Yongsan District traces the peninsula’s military history, from ancient conflicts to the Korean War and later wars. Six indoor exhibition halls bring together artifacts, weapons, documentary footage and military equipment; outside, you can see aircraft, tanks and naval vessels. Memorials and sculptures give the site a quieter, reflective side. Entry is free, but the scale calls for time: allow at least half a day if you want to explore both the galleries and outdoor displays.

A museum built around remembrance

War Memorial of Korea

The War Memorial of Korea opened in 1994 on the former site of the army headquarters. Its purpose is to preserve and present Korea’s military history, commemorate people affected by war and encourage learning from past conflicts. The memorial also expresses hope for peaceful reunification between North and South Korea.

The site combines a museum with memorial spaces. The subject is serious, and the displays address the human cost of conflict as well as military events and equipment. Allow yourself time to move through the exhibitions at your own pace.

Six halls of Korean military history

The indoor collection covers Korea’s conflicts from ancient times to the present, with particular attention to the Korean War of 1950 to 1953. Six exhibition halls divide the material into themed displays. You’ll find weapons, uniforms, maps, military objects and exhibits explaining the course of the war. Documentary footage and real equipment add context to the historical displays.

The War History room places Korean events alongside developments in Eastern and Western history, with a timeline running from around 2000 BC to the 21st century. Other halls include displays on military equipment and the development of Korea’s armed forces. The breadth of the collection means you can focus on one period or follow the history across the galleries.

Outdoor equipment and memorials

Large objects that cannot fit inside are displayed outdoors. The grounds include tanks, aircraft, artillery and naval equipment, alongside sculptures and memorials. The outdoor displays offer a different way to understand the scale and technology of military history after seeing the smaller objects in the halls.

The Peace Garden and the circle of flags memorial are among the site’s reflective spaces. Take time there between exhibition areas. The museum also has a Children’s Museum with interactive exhibits and educational activities, giving families a separate way to approach the subject of war and peace.
