Hamdeok Beach sits on the northern coast of Jeju Island, about 14 km east of Jeju City. It is made up of three connected beaches with white sand and shallow turquoise water. Seoubong Peak, a volcanic cone, rises at the eastern edge of the beach and shelters it from the wind. Families come for the calm, shallow swimming, and cafes, restaurants, parking, showers and watersports rentals are close by. Walk up Seoubong for views over the coast, or wait for the tide to go out, when a sand bar appears.
Three beaches in one

Hamdeok is made up of three separate beaches. The main beach is about 500 metres wide and is the major swimming area. The other two sections are quieter, with one area set aside for private use and another tucked away at the far side.
In peak season the sand gets crowded. The beach has the facilities you would expect, including restrooms, showers and a car park, so a day here is easy to plan around the crowds. At low tide, a wide sand bar emerges, and you can walk out along it with the turquoise water on both sides.
Seoubong Peak and the wind

The volcanic cone of Seoubong Peak stands at the eastern edge of the beach. Its shape blocks much of the wind, which is one reason the water stays calm for swimming and the shore is comfortable to sit on.
The peak is a small hill with a walking path to the top. The climb is short, and from the summit you can see the coast, the sand and the surrounding area. Many visitors go up before or after their time in the water.
Getting there
From Jeju City, bus #10, #11 or #20 reaches the beach in about an hour. Bus 201 leaves from Jeju Intercity Bus Station and takes just over half an hour. The beach also has a car park, which is useful if you have a hired car and want to drive around the island.
When you plan the trip, allow extra time on busy weekends, when parking fills up.
Staying and eating nearby
A camping ground sits behind the main beach, separated from the sand by a large dune. Caravans are also available to stay in. Hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes are spread along the coast, a short walk from the sand.
Cafe Delmoondo is one of the best-known cafes here, with a sea view from its seats. It is a good place for a snack or a late meal while you watch the water.
