Blyde River Canyon sits in Mpumalanga province in northeastern South Africa, on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment. The road runs along the rim, and steep cliffs drop to a river valley of forest and plantations. The best-known stops are the Three Rondavels, round rock formations named after traditional huts, and God's Window, where the land falls away toward the lowveld. Bourke's Luck Potholes, deep cylindrical holes carved into the rock by swirling water, lie a short walk from the road.
Hazyview and Graskop are common bases, and a day drive from either reaches the main lookouts. A full day covers the rim drive, the main viewpoints and one or two short trails. Two or three days allow a slower pace and a walk into the valley. The dry months, roughly May to September, bring clearer air for views, while the wet summer months bring greener scenery and more water in the falls.
