The abbey grounds are open to explore, and the Legacy Bar has views towards the Fife Coastal Path and River Tay.

A distillery beside the abbey ruins

Lindores Abbey Distillery

Lindores Abbey Distillery is built beside the remains of Lindores Abbey, a 12th-century religious site near Newburgh in Fife. The abbey is linked to the earliest written reference to whisky production in Scotland: in 1494, Friar John Cor was commissioned to make aqua vitae for King James IV.

The site’s distilling history resumed in 2017, after a break of more than 500 years. The distillery buildings use local stone and timber. Inside, a 20-metre wooden table made by a local artisan is one of the details visitors notice in the visitor centre.

What the tour covers

Guided tours bring the distillery and the abbey’s history together. Guides explain the production process and the site’s historical connection to whisky, then lead a tasting of Lindores expressions. The guided tasting is a useful way to compare the whiskies and hear the stories attached to each dram.

The distillery may not be producing spirit during your visit. When it is quiet, you can get closer to the equipment and see areas that are normally off-limits. If seeing production in action matters to you, check with the distillery before booking.

Aqua Vitae and the abbey grounds

Aqua Vitae is a botanical spirit made with spices, dried fruit and locally grown green herbs. It gives non-whisky drinkers another way to explore the distillery’s spirits.

Allow time to walk around the abbey ruins next door. The grounds and distillery sit near the Fife Coastal Path, and the Legacy Bar looks towards the path and the River Tay. Dogs are welcome on guided tours, so the visit can work for people travelling with a pet.
