Inside the former courthouse

The museum occupies a restored 18th-century courthouse built in 1773. Its exterior has a central clock tower and large Georgian-style windows. Inside, preserved features and historical props help set the scene for the displays.

A courtroom reconstruction focuses on a 1700s trial following a drunken brawl at an inn. Costumed waxwork figures recreate the proceedings, while transcripts of real example cases provide extra detail. The presentation combines the courtroom scene with information boards and artefacts.

Local photographs and archives add detail to the town’s past, alongside exhibits on law and order. The displays cover more than Cromarty’s fishing and oil industries, so allow time to look through the rooms beyond the courtroom.

Head downstairs to see the jail courtyard scene, representing the space where prisoners took their daily exercise. A small gift shop is also on site. The museum is family-friendly, and staff can provide information sheets.
