The castle and its collections

Brodick Castle was the home of the Dukes of Hamilton. The red-sandstone building you see today dates largely from a major 19th-century extension, completed in 1844. A castle on the site has served as a military fortress, and its position beneath Goatfell overlooks Brodick Bay and the Firth of Clyde.

Inside, the visitor experience brings together Victorian interiors and period objects, including furniture, silverware, porcelain, paintings and sporting trophies. Interactive elements include a Victorian arcade, costumed interpreters, sound and mood lighting. You can explore at your own pace, and staff are available to answer questions. Talks about members of the family sometimes take place.

Gardens and woodland paths

The grounds are a substantial part of a visit. The formal gardens include landscaped planting and a walled garden, with unusual plants along the paths. In spring, the rhododendron collection is in bloom. Further out, woodland trails lead past ponds and waterfalls, as well as statues and art installations. One of the curiosities to look for is the Bavarian Summerhouse.

Red squirrels live in the woodland, and there is a hide where you can watch for them. Move quietly around the hide to avoid frightening them away. The grounds also include open spaces and more sheltered corners, so you can choose a shorter garden stroll or spend longer following the paths.

A family visit

The outdoor play area has wooden equipment for children, including a treehouse and rope bridge. It is a good reason to leave time for the grounds, especially if you are visiting as a family. The gift shop also has old fair games to try.

The on-site café serves sandwiches, soup and cakes. It can close earlier than the rest of the site, so plan a café stop before setting out on a longer walk. Dogs can accompany you around the grounds, but they are not allowed inside the castle.
