On Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow, the Victory Museum traces the Soviet experience of World War II through military objects, personal stories, dioramas and large-scale scenes. Inside, the Hall of Glory and Hall of Remembrance give the visit a solemn focus; displays extend across four floors. Outside, Victory Park has monuments, fountains and military equipment, including tanks and aircraft. Much of the written information is in Russian, so an audio guide or translation app can help you follow the exhibits. Allow a substantial part of the day if you want to explore both the museum and its grounds.

A museum of the Soviet wartime experience

Victory Museum
Victory Museum

The Victory Museum stands on Poklonnaya Hill and is dedicated to the Soviet Union’s role in World War II, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War. It opened on May 9, 1995, commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The museum also remembers the immense human cost of the conflict, in which approximately 27 million Soviet citizens died.

Its exhibitions approach the war through military history and the experiences of those who lived through it. The collection includes personal and military objects, weapons and equipment, alongside displays about different aspects and stages of the conflict. The material covers the struggle against Germany and Japan, and includes objects associated with Soviet, German and American forces.

Dioramas and memorial halls

Dioramas and reconstructed scenes give the exhibits a large-scale setting. One display recreates the Reichstag as it appeared after its capture. The Hall of Glory and Hall of Remembrance are among the museum’s central memorial spaces, with the latter offering a quieter place to reflect on those who died.

Exhibits are spread across four floors, with military equipment and wartime objects among the material on view. The museum also has a theater. Some visitors have found that access to upper-floor areas can depend on joining a tour group, so check what is open to individual visitors when planning your route.

Allow time for the park

The visit can continue outside in Victory Park, where monuments and fountains sit alongside displays of military machinery. Tanks, aircraft and other equipment are among the outdoor exhibits; the wider collection includes artillery and air force displays. The park’s fountains are lit in red after dark, giving you a reason to stay into the evening.

The museum and grounds together can fill much of a day. If you have limited time, decide in advance whether the indoor exhibitions or the outdoor displays matter more to you, then leave room for the memorial halls. The museum is wheelchair accessible, including its entrance and restrooms.

Language and planning

English explanations are limited in parts of the museum, and much of the written information is in Russian. An audio guide can help explain the exhibits, though it may not cover every display. A translation app is another option if you want to read the labels as you go.

The museum is closed on Mondays and opens later on Tuesdays than on other days. Advance tickets are recommended. Its facilities include a coat check and a restaurant, useful if you plan to spend several hours on site.
