Kazan Cathedral stands at the northeastern corner of Red Square, near the Resurrection Gate, the State Historical Museum and GUM.

Kazan Cathedral stands at the northeastern corner of Red Square, near the Resurrection Gate, the State Historical Museum and GUM. The Russian Orthodox church is a reconstruction of a cathedral first built in the 17th century and demolished in 1936. Its red-and-white facade, single dome and tiered roof details make it easy to distinguish from the larger landmarks around the square. Inside, look for the richly decorated interior and a replica of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan. This is an active place of worship, so enter quietly and follow local customs.

Kazan Cathedral

Kazan Cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan and stands near the northeastern entrance to Red Square, close to the Resurrection Gate. The original church was built in the 17th century and became one of Moscow’s important places of worship. It was demolished in 1936 during the Soviet era.

The building you see today is a reconstruction, completed in 1993. Before the original was torn down, its measurements were recorded, helping inform the later rebuilding. The present cathedral restores the church’s place on the square, where it sits among major civic and commercial landmarks.

Architecture and interior

The cathedral’s red-and-white exterior, single dome and tiers of kokoshniks give it a different profile from the larger churches nearby. A tented belfry forms part of the design. Take a moment outside to notice the facade’s details before stepping in.

The interior is compact and richly decorated with images and objects connected to Russian Orthodox worship. A replica of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan is kept here; the original was relocated to St. Petersburg. The church is an active place of worship, and services are held there.

Visiting respectfully

You can enter the cathedral during its daily opening hours, but plan for a short stop rather than a museum-style visit. The interior is small, and a brief visit is enough to see its decoration and the icon replica.

Dress and behave with the setting in mind. Remove your hat when entering; women may wish to cover their heads. Photography may not be permitted inside, so check the rules on arrival and be prepared to enjoy the interior without taking pictures. Early morning or late evening can be a quieter time to visit.
