In Massarelos, near the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, Museu Romântico occupies a former aristocratic residence associated with Charles Albert of Sardinia, who lived in exile in Porto in the mid-19th century. Rooms display objects connected with life in Portugal’s Romantic era, from clothing and paintings to ceramics and natural specimens. Take time to read the room descriptions, then step into the garden for views over the Douro. The museum also hosts concerts, adding a musical dimension to a visit.
A former residence in Massarelos

Museu Romântico is housed in the Macieirinha residence in Massarelos, close to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal. The building was once a home for the Portuguese nobility. Charles Albert of Sardinia lived here in exile in the middle of the 19th century.
The museum opened in 1972. Its focus is the daily life of local aristocratic families during the 19th century, presented through the rooms and the objects on display.
Rooms and displays

The collection ranges across natural specimens, clothing, paintings and ceramics. Displays are arranged through several rooms on two floors, so the visit is best taken at an unhurried pace. English descriptions allow you to explore without joining a guided visit.
Some objects may feel like an eclectic mix, but together they give a sense of the material surroundings of the period. After seeing the rooms, the garden provides a place to pause and look towards the Douro.

The museum holds regular concerts, including classical music performances. Check the museum’s current programme if you would like to pair the collection with a performance.
Entry is free on Sundays according to the visitor information, and Porto Card holders are also reported to have complimentary access. The museum is closed on Mondays. Its website has current visitor information: https://museudoporto.pt/estacao/museu-romantico/
