Fortaleza do Pico, also known as São João Baptista Fortress, was built in the 17th century as part of Funchal’s defences against corsair attacks. Its position above the city gives it a clear view over Funchal and the bay. Thick stone walls and the fortress grounds remain central to a visit.
The fortress later had a military role as a gunpowder warehouse. In the mid-20th century it became Navy property, and a Navy Communications Centre was established there.

Getting up to the fortress

There is a second entrance on the eastern side, so the sea-level approach may involve walking around the fortress to reach it. On-site toilets are available.
