The Warsaw Mermaid stands in the middle of the Old Town Market Square, among the colourful historic buildings and cafés. Known in Polish as Syrenka, she is a symbol of the city and a popular stop for photos while exploring the square. Look closely at her sword and shield, then take time to notice the surrounding architecture. The statue is also tied to a local legend about a mermaid who promised to protect Warsaw.

The statue stands at the centre of Warsaw’s Old Town Market Square. In Polish, the mermaid is called Syrenka. She is one of the city’s most recognisable symbols, and versions of the figure appear elsewhere in Warsaw.

The square gives the monument a setting of colourful historic buildings, cafés and restaurants. Take a moment to look at the mermaid from different sides, then explore the surrounding lanes and nearby historic sites.

A statue with a legend

Local legend tells of a mermaid caught in fishermen’s nets. They freed her, and she promised to protect the city in return. The figure’s sword and shield give that protective role a visible form.

Konstanty Hegel designed the original sculpture in 1855. The statue now in the square is a copy; the original was moved to the Museum of Warsaw in 2008. The museum is nearby, so you can pair the outdoor stop with a visit there.
