At Żelazna 74 in Warsaw, Keret House fits into the gap between two buildings from different periods of the city’s history. Designed by architect Jakub Szczęsny and built in 2012, this art installation is about four feet wide and has two floors. It is used mainly for art residencies, so a visit from the street may be your only option. If you’re interested in contemporary architecture, check whether a tour is available before you go.

A house between two eras

Keret House
Keret House

Keret House was designed by architect Jakub Szczęsny and built in 2012. Its position between two existing buildings gives the project its defining form: one neighbour dates from before the Second World War, while the other is postwar. The installation brings those different layers of Warsaw’s history together in a space only about four feet wide.

The house is named for Israeli writer Etgar Keret. His parents survived the Holocaust in Poland, a connection that gives the project’s location particular historical resonance.
